CMNS undergraduates have many opportunities to do scientific research under the direction of a faculty member. One of the most intensive and rewarding research experiences can be found in the departmental honors programs. Each departmental honors program is unique and details can be found on departmental websites. Students can participate in departmental honors in an area different than their major. Students in departmental honors:
- pursue an extensive mentored independent research project
- usually write and defend an honors thesis; depending on the department non-thesis options may be available
- are considered part of the Honors College and have Honors College benefits such as the ability to take Honors seminars and H-version courses
- earn the distinction of a deparmental honors designation on their transcript
