Senior Mathematics Major Elliot Frank to Participate in Fulbright Summer Institute
Elliot Frank, a University of Maryland senior double majoring in mathematics and English language and literature, will participate in the Fulbright Summer Institute for Young American Student Leaders at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom (U.K.).
“Upon learning I was accepted to the Fulbright summer program, I was elated to think of the people I would meet and things I would experience in my first trip to the United Kingdom,” says Frank. “UMD has given me extraordinary flexibility to pursue my humanities interests while still fully participating in my math major. I'm sure the research experiences I've had within the math major were instrumental in my being chosen.”
Frank learned about quantum computing theory as an intern in the Laboratory for Physical Sciences. As a member of the UMD Gemstone honors program, Frank’s team is using Wikipedia to uncover differences in cultural perception. More specifically, the team is analyzing United States political intervention in Latin America in the 19th century in both Spanish and English.
During the four-week cultural and academic program, Frank will learn about the culture and history of Bristol and the U.K., especially as they relate to the institute’s theme of “Slavery and the Atlantic Heritage”. In addition to coursework, the program offers historical and cultural experiences. Frank, who is interested in writings from the African diaspora, is excited about the opportunity to examine how Bristol has acknowledged its heritage and the modern legacies of the slave trade including social inequality and public health disparities.
Created by treaty in 1948, the U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Commission fosters mutual cultural understanding through educational exchange between both nations.
