Researchers have engineered a cloud of atoms (blue circles) to create exotic interactions that selectively whittle down a beam of light made of bunches of one, two or three photons (red circles). In the animation above, the ideal case is presented: All groups of three photons interact with each other and are knocked out of the beam, while the smaller bunches pass through unaffected.
