2021 Virtual Summer Science Camps at UMD for K-12 Students

The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences offers 2021 summer camps in computer science, math and more

JumpStart Computing Elementary Camp: For Rising 4th and 5th Graders (Virtual)

Session 1: July 5-9, 2021

Session 2: July 12-16, 2021

Cost: $100

Elementary students are invited to an interactive learning experience in computing, robotics, and cybersecurity. Students will cover topics such as Python Art, Number Theory, Scratch, and Cryptography over the course of this one-week camp. Students will explore computing topics and additional resources to continue their learning. Students should have a basic level of reading comprehension and math skills. Registration is open. Computer Science Connect (CompSciConnect): For Rising 6th, 7th and 8th Graders (Virtual)

Yellow: Session One: June 21-July 2, 2021 or Session Two: August 2-13, 2021

Red: Session One: June 21-July 2, 2021 or Session Two: July 19-30, 2021

Terp: ​Session One: July 19-30, 2021 or Session Two: August 2-13, 2021 

Cost: $150 

CompSciConnect is a three-year summer camp (Yellow, Red and Terp groups) that typically begins with rising 6th graders joining the Yellow group. Each summer, students learn more advanced skills and also meet once a month throughout the school year to maintain those skills. Through the three years, students explore block programming with scratch (Yellow); web programming with HTML, CSS and JavaScript (Red); and Python and 3D programming (Terp), along with cybersecurity/safety, cryptology, number bases, logic and computer use skills. Through the three years, we emphasize how these skills connect to other areas of study and to making the world a better place.

**Note: Students are typically only accepted into Yellow and Red. There will be 45-50 spots for Yellow campers, and about 10-20 spots for Red.

All rising 6th graders will be considered for Yellow ONLY.

All rising 7th graders will be considered for Yellow or Red ONLY.

All rising 8th graders will be considered for Red.

Girls Talk Math: For Rising 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Graders (Virtual) 

July 19-30, 2021

Girls Talk Math is an online camp for 2021 that runs 2-4 p.m. on weekdays. Additionally, there will be special events on Saturdays such as panels and interviews with women mathematicians. Rising 9th to rising 12th grade students who attend high school within commuting distance of UMD can apply. Camp activities involve learning mathematics outside of the standard curriculum, attending mini lectures on math, as well as recording and publishing a podcast about a famous female mathematician. Registration is open.

Introduction to Computing 101: For Rising 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Graders (Virtual) 

Session 1: July 5-9, 2021

Session 2: July 12-16, 2021

Cost: $150 

Come join us to learn the basics of Python. Students will spend the weeks with current UMD computer science students to explore the field. Students will have virtual lab visits and field trips. Students with previous computing experience should explore one of our other camps as this is created to be an introduction to computing. Registration is open. Terp Young Scholars: For Rising 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Graders (Virtual)

July 11-30, 2021

Designed for high school students (rising grade 9 to graduating grade 12), Terp Young Scholars-Online delivers an academic experience that is at the forefront of theory, thought and technology. You’ll choose one three-credit course, attend class, study, work on projects, prepare for exams, and interact with your peers in a virtual academic setting. Featuring rigorous online instruction, classes meet Monday to Friday generally for three hours a day between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and may include an afternoon session. 

The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences will offer three courses during summer 2021:

Biological Sciences Program: Environmental Biology

Biological Sciences Program: Modern Medicine

Computer Science: Introduction to Web Programming Using HTML/JavaScript 

Applications opened January 5, 2021. Applications close June 1, 2021. Applications are reviewed and admission made on a first-come, first-served basis.

AI4ALL: For Rising 10th, 11th and 12th Graders (Virtual)

July 12-30, 2021

Cost: $300

AI4ALL is a three-week computer programming and artificial intelligence (AI) summer camp (online for 2021). Students will come away from the camp knowing how AI can be used to help people and an idea of what kinds of careers there are in AI. Students will be exposed to personal growth, education, and hands-on experiences presented by faculty, guest lecturers,  and students at the University of Maryland. Throughout the program, students will experience a blended learning environment with formal instruction, group work with UMD AI faculty and graduate students, as well as virtual field trips and lab visits, and guest speakers. Cyber Defense Training Camp: For Rising 11th and 12th Graders (Virtual)

June 21-July 2, 2021

Cost: $500 

Cyber Defense Training Camp is a two-week virtual summer camp for summer 2021. Participants will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of cybersecurity and gain practical skills through instruction by an experienced security professional. Students learn about career options in the field, take at least one virtual field trip and hear from a variety of speakers to learn more about how to prepare to enter this exciting profession. Additionally, students will be introduced to the Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students (ACES) honors program offered at the University of Maryland. 

*Technical experience is recommended, including networking, Cisco Academy, and/or Java programming.

Jump Start Biomedical Science Program: For Rising 11th and 12th Graders (Virtual)

Session 1 (AM): July 12-23, 2021

Session 2 (PM): July 12-23, 2021

Cost: $250

The Jump Start Program will invite 50 rising high school juniors and seniors to participate in a two-week-long virtual summer science program hosted by the University of Maryland. The program was developed through a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and is now sponsored by UMD’s College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. Students considering a career in the sciences will have the opportunity to learn the tools of modern life sciences research and experience the excitement of discovery. Students will participate in discussions, case studies, online laboratory investigations, and professional development workshops.

The theme for the Summer 2021 Jump Start program is biomedical science. Students will learn about anatomy and physiology and the way in which cellular and molecular techniques are changing the way we understand, diagnose, and treat disease. Applications are open. Applications close March 31, 2021.
