Astronomy and Physics dual degrees

AustenFourkasAusten Fourkas 

Austen is a junior Physics & Astronomy dual degree student from Bethesda, MD. He completed the College Park Scholars 'Science and Global Change' program during his freshman and sophomore years, and is currently researching gravitational microlensing through the Astronomy Department. On campus, he has been in the Mighty Sound of Maryland since his freshman year, and is now a squad leader for the tenor saxophone section. He is also the event coordinator for the AstroTerps astronomy club, and an avid intramural sports fan. His favorite spots on campus are the Animal Sciences courtyard, and the Chapel Lawn. So far, his favorite classes have been ASTR 310: Observational Astronomy and PHYS 401: Quantum Mechanics .

Katie is a senior Astronomy and Physics dual degree student. She completed the Science, Discovery, and the Universe Scholars Program. She is plant obsessed, and loves all things related to black holes – especially the supermassive, active ones at the centers of certain galaxies. She enjoys working with her peers as a CMNS peer mentor and teaching kids about space at the UMD Observatory. Her favorite class so far has been ASTR121: Introductory Astrophysics II – Stars and Beyond.

Sam is a senior Atmospheric and Oceanic Science major from Hughesville, Maryland. Isha Vashee is a sophomore Biochemistry major and Spanish minor in the Design Cultures and Creativity honors program. She is from Germantown, MD and can be found at her favorite places on campus, Washington Quad and the coffee bar at ESJ. Her favorite class so far has been MATH141: Calculus II. Around campus, she is involved in the Phi Delta Epsilon pre-medical fraternity and a tutoring program for underprivileged children. Julia is a senior double majoring in Biochemistry and Mathematics with a specialization in Statistics from Fulton, Maryland. During her free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends, taking barre classes at OpenBarre, and learning American Sign Language. Her favorite class she has taken at UMD is BCHM461: Biochemistry I and her favorite spots on campus include the coffee bar at the Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center (ESJ) and the fifth floor of McKeldin Library.

Seyi is a junior Biochemistry major and African Studies minor from Bowie, Maryland. She was a part of the Immunogenetics and Bacteria Pathogenesis streams in the FIRE program and her favorite classes so far have been Mammalian Physiology (BSCI440) and General Chemistry 2 (CHEM276). Her favorite place on campus is Stamp Student Union. On campus, she participates in UMD Gymkana, will serve as secretary of the Charles R. Anjali Talasila is a senior Biological Science: Physiology and Neurobiology major and Statistics minor from Laurel, MD. She is also a part of the Integrated Life Sciences honors program and is on the pre-med track. On campus, she has participated in lab research in the Bioengineering department and volunteered with Terps for Change and CHEARS. Currently, she is a scribe at a local hospital and volunteers with the Paper Airplanes organization. Her favorite place on campus is the Xfinity Center because she loves watching UMD Basketball! At UMD, she has participated in BioFIRE and will be a member of its advisory board. Alyssa is on the UMD cheerleading team as well as part of UMD’s peer mentorship group, La Familia. She loves photography, video editing, volunteering, and meeting new people. So far, her favorite class is FIRE198 which is her second semester FIRE class and her research stream is Cloud Computing. She likes this class mostly because she has the opportunity to conduct research with her classmates who she has had the pleasure of getting to know.

RohanMia Bennett  

Mia is a senior Computer Science major with a Korean Studies minor from Silver Spring, MD. She is a Japanese speaking partner for the Language Partner Program and tour guide for Maryland Images. Her favorite place on campus is Washington Quad, where she can relax and hang out with friends, and the most interesting class she’s taken is CMSC250. Outside of her classes, she loves to travel and has studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea and Helsinki, Finland.

Naveen is a senior Computer Science and Math double major in the ACES honors college from Rockville, MD. He is a part of the puzzle club, and is currently teaching a course on coding interviews. Rida Khan is a sophomore Computer Science Major and is part of the Honors College. She is from Rockville, Maryland and her favorite place on campus is the Maryland Dairy. Her hobbies include playing video games like League of Legends and Apex Legends, as well as the card game, Yu-gi-oh. She also enjoys graphic design and redesigning and rebranding logos. Her favorite class so far has been the Honors College class, HNUH228Z: The Problem of Prejudice because of the topics that are covered and the discussions between her classmates.

Ritwika Das

Ritwika is a senior Computer Science major and Math minor from Westminster, Maryland. She is a part of the Computer Science Honors program and a member of the UMD Loop team, a team centered around engineering a pod for the SpaceX competition. Her favorite places on campus include Mckelden Mall and the fountain in front of Kirwan Hall and her favorite classes have been CMSC351: Algorithms and MATH 241: Calculus III.

Skylar is a junior from Germantown, Maryland in the Design, Cultures, and Creativity honors program. He's a Computer Science major and a Humanities, Health, and Medicine minor, and is considering an MD/PhD in bioinformatics. He's a counselor for Camp Kesem, a national community that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer. In his free time, he enjoys composing electronic music, practicing karate, and playing too many video games. His favorite place on campus is the Clarice Performing Arts Center, and his favorite classes so far are ANTH265 and BSCI222.

Yash Kalyani is a Junior Computer Science major pursuing a minor in Business Analytics, he
is part of Code Black UMD. He is from Pune, India and his favorite places on campus are
LaPlata Beach and the North Campus Dining Hall. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer,
Call of Duty, going out with friends, and binging shows. His favorite class at college so far
has been CMSC320: Introduction to Data Science.

Maddy is a junior geology major and planetary science minor from Westminster, MD. She is part of
geology departmental honors and is a research assistant with M-Class Laboratory. She is also the vice
president of the women’s club ice hockey team. In her free time, she enjoys baking, hiking, and
crocheting. Her favorite places on-campus are mckeldin mall and the geology building, and her favorite
class so far has been GEOL322: Mineralogy.

Ainsley is a junior Mathematics and Economics dual degree student from Ellicott City, Maryland. On campus, she is involved in Alpha Phi Omega (UMD's service fraternity), club jogging, and she studied abroad in Italy the summer before her freshman year. Cameron Hewitt

Cameron is a senior Applied Mathematics major with an intended double major in Criminal Justice and Criminology from Frederick, Maryland. He is involved on campus with the Residence Hall Association (RHA), is a Resudent Assistant (RA), and completed the First-Year Innovation and Research Experience (FIRE). He was enrolled in the Immunogenetics stream in FIRE and completed the summer fellowship offered by the program. His favorite locations on campus are Tawes Plaza and the Cambridge Community Center. His favorite class so far in college has been CHEM231 - Organic Chemistry 1.

Jonathan Lin

Jonathan is a senior dual major in mathematics and computer science from Potomac, Maryland. His favorite place on campus is the undergraduate math building lounge and his favorite classes so far have been MATH340 (Honors Multivariable Calculus) and MATH403 (Abstract Algebra). Jonathan is involved in the Beekeeping Club, the Rubik's Cube club, and the Swing Dance Club. Jonathan has the Maryland state record for solving a rubik's cube with his feet.

Sriya is a junior Applied Mathematics major and French Studies minor from Clarksville, MD. She is on a pre-med track in the Integrated Life Sciences honors program. Her favorite places on campus are Eppley Recreational Center and the STEM library. In her free time she likes to hang out with friends and spend time outside. Cameron Paranzino 

Cameron is a junior from Bethesda, Maryland. He’s majoring in Neuroscience with minors in Statistics and Philosophy and is part of the University Honors program. His favorite place on campus is Chick-fil-A. He is an avid reader and writer, and loves to spend his nights skating around campus. So far, his favorite class has been CHEM 232: Organic Chemistry Laboratory I.

Caitlin Madden is a sophomore Neuroscience major specializing in the behavioral and cognitive concentration and is considering medical school or Ph.D. programs. Her favorite class so far has been NEUR200: Introduction to Neuroscience. She is from Ellicott City, Maryland, and is involved with Greek life on campus. In her free time, she loves to hang out with friends, go to the gym, and make chocolate chip cookies.
