Astronomy

AustenFourkasAusten Fourkas 

Austen is a senior Physics & Astronomy dual degree student from Bethesda, MD. He completed the College Park Scholars 'Science and Global Change' program, and is currently researching gravitational microlensing through the Astronomy Department. He has been in the Mighty Sound of Maryland since his freshman year, and is a squad leader for the tenor saxophone section. He is also the event coordinator for AstroTerps, and an avid intramural sports fan. His favorite spots on campus are the Animal Sciences courtyard, and the Chapel Lawn. So far, his favorite classes have been ASTR 310: Observational Astronomy and PHYS 401: Quantum Mechanics.

 

siobahnSiobhan Light 

Siobhan is a senior from Ashton, Maryland pursuing dual degrees in Astronomy and Geology (Geophysics track) and a minor in atmospheric science. She has completed the University Honors program and is involved in research both on campus in the geology department and at the nearby NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. She is active officer in AstroTerps and the Equity Constellation, has participated in intramural sports, and studied abroad via the Alternative Breaks program. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, going to concerts, and hiking. Her favorite class so far is ASTR 120: Introductory Astrophysics, and favorite spots on campus include the gardens by Memorial Chapel and McKeldin Mall. 

 

 

Biochemistry

Eirena LiEirena Li

My name is Eirena Li, and I'm a rising pre-dental junior pursuing a double degree in biochemistry and English literary and cultural studies. For the past two years, I have been working under Dr. Emme Bruns in the UMD Department of Biology studying epidemiology in the Silene latifolia (white campion flower) and Microbotryum lychnidis-diocea (fungal pathogen) system. I am passionate about nature and conservation! Beyond research and work, I enjoy drawing, playing the piano, and learning about insects! I am currently raising my very first colony of ants, a Formica pallidefulva colony!

 

 

IshaVasheeIsha Vashee

Isha Vashee is a junior Biochemistry major and Spanish minor in the Design Cultures and Creativity honors program. She is from Germantown, MD and can be found at her favorite places on campus, Washington Quad and the coffee bar at ESJ. Her favorite class so far has been MATH141: Calculus II. Around campus, she is involved in the Phi Delta Epsilon pre-medical fraternity and a tutoring program for underprivileged children. Jack is a sophomore Biochemistry and Economics double major and a part of the Integrated Life Sciences Honors Program. He is from Germantown, Maryland, and his favorite spot on campus is Washington Quad. Emilee is a sophomore majoring in Biological Sciences: General Biology on the pre-med track in the Integrated Life Sciences Honors College program. She is from Montgomery County, MD, and in her free time, she likes to work out and play guitar. Sara is a senior Biological Sciences: Microbiology major and Business minor on the Pre-Medical track. She is a member of the Life Sciences Scholars Program and conducts research on mammary gland development as a part of the Biology Honors Program. Her favorite place on campus is the lawn outside of Clarice. She is from North Potomac, MD and in her free time, she loves spending time outside, playing her violin, and practicing martial arts. At UMD, she serves as the President of the Student Health Advisory Committee, tutors refugee youth, and is a Resident Assistant. Skylar is a senior from Germantown, Maryland and in the Design, Cultures, and Creativity honors program. He is a Computer Science major with a minor in Humanities, Health, and Medicine. He is preparing for an MD/PhD in bioinformatics. He's also a counselor for Camp Kesem, a national community that supports children through and beyond their parent's cancer. In his free time, he enjoys composing electronic music, practicing karate, and eating pizza. His favorite place on campus is the Clarice Performing Arts Center, and his favorite classes so far have been CMSC423: Bioinformatics and BSCI411H: Bioinformatics. 

 

 

   

Geology

MaddyRaithMaddy Raith

Maddy is a senior geology major and planetary science minor from Westminster, MD. She is part of geology departmental honors and is a research assistant with M-Class Laboratory. She is also the vice president of the women’s club ice hockey team. In her free time, she enjoys baking, hiking, and crocheting. Her favorite places on-campus are mckeldin mall and the geology building, and her favorite class so far has been GEOL322: Mineralogy.

Lindsey is a junior Applied Mathematics major and business minor from Bel Air, MD. Her favorite places on campus are ESJ and the Mckeldin Mall. On campus she is involved in Greek life, club softball and undergraduate math club. In her free time, she loves spending time with friends and exercising. Her favorite class so far has been Stat410: Introduction to Probability Theory.

 

 

Sriya PotluriSriya Potluri

Sriya is a senior Applied Mathematics major and French Studies minor from Clarksville, MD. She is on a pre-med track in the Integrated Life Sciences honors program. Her favorite places on campus are Eppley Recreational Center and the STEM library. In her free time she likes to hang out with friends and spend time outside. Her favorite class so far has been MATH340: Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations I (Honors).

Caitlin Madden is a senior Neuroscience major specializing in the behavioral and cognitive concentration with a minor in Science, Technology, Ethics, and Policy. Caitlin is considering graduate school, specifically Ph.D. programs. Her favorite class so far has been NEUR306: Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience. She is from Ellicott City, Maryland, and is involved with Greek life on campus. In her free time, she loves to hang out with friends, go to the gym, and make chocolate chip cookies. Caitlin's favorite spots on campus include ESJ (Edward St. John building), and the Chickfila at STAMP student union.

Jennifer is a junior from Boyds, MD pursuing dual degrees in Neuroscience and Information Science. She is currently part of the Integrated Life Sciences honors program. Outside of class, she is involved in research with neuroscience and environmental health labs. She also participates in various service and pre-professional student organizations. Her favorite places on campus are the Eppley Recreation Center and McKeldin Mall. Lauryl Reese Delaney

Lauryl is a sophomore neuroscience major. She is a part of the FIRE program in the addiction sciences stream. She resides from Glen Burnie, MD. Lauryl enjoys reading and enjoys listening to music. She loves going on walks around campus and getting a bite at the Spot Mini and Ice Cream from Maryland Diary. Lauryl loves meeting new people and exploring new places!

 

 

Meira KidorfMeira Kidorf 

Meira is a junior Neuroscience major with a minor in Spanish, on the Pre-Med track. She hails from Baltimore, MD and her favorite places on campus include the chemistry garden, the UMD dairy, and the Quad. In her free time enjoys running, reading, lifting, and hanging out with her friends! She is a Bodypump instructor on campus and is also involved with the UMD Hillel. Her favorite courses so far have been BSCI222: Genetics and CHEM241: Organic Chemistry II.

Sofie is a senior Neuroscience major and Sustainability minor on the pre-med track. She is from Rockville, Maryland. She keeps very busy as a Global Public Health scholar, part of a research lab on campus, a member of the Nu Rho Psi Neuroscience Honors Society, and a teaching assistant for NEUR305! So far, her favorite classes have been NEUR305 and BCHM463. She loves learning and meeting new people. 

 

 

 

Immersive Media Design

Alyssa Mazzone 

Alyssa Mazzone is a junior dual major in Immersive Media Design: Computing and Computer Science with a concentration in Cybersecurity and involved in the FIRE program. She is from Lusby, MD (close to Solomon’s Island) and her favorite place on campus is the Brendon Iribe Computer Science building because she can get work done there. Alyssa is on the UMD cheerleading team as well as part of UMD’s peer mentorship group, La Familia. She loves photography, video editing, volunteering, and meeting new people. So far, her favorite class is FIRE198 which is her second semester FIRE class and her research stream is Cloud Computing. She likes this class mostly because she has the opportunity to conduct research with her classmates who she has had the pleasure of getting to know.

 

 

Physics

Jason BarbierJason Barbier

Jason Barbier a physics senior and an 8-year US Air Force veteran, originally from Dunkirk, MD. He is currently a physics tutor on campus. Electricity and Magnetism (PHYS272), and The English language (ENGL280) were his favorite classes. His favorite places on campus are anywhere he can study collaboratively, like Stamp, McKeldin, and Iribe buildings. He’s had the honor of learning from incredible professors and innovative peers. Next, he is looking forward to the exciting fields of quantum and energy research.
