Jonathan Dinman Named Chair of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics
Jonathan Dinman, professor of cell biology and molecular genetics at the University of Maryland, has been named chair of the department, effective November 15, 2015. Dinman has been serving as interim chair of the department since July 1, 2014.
"During the past 16 months as interim chair, Jon has shown how deeply committed he is to advancing the research and education missions of the department,” said Jayanth Banavar, dean of the UMD College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. “I look forward to continuing to work with Jon in this leadership role.”
Dinman joined UMD in 2002 as an associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics and was promoted to professor in 2008. Prior to working at UMD, he was a faculty member in the Department of Molecular Genetics & Microbiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
His research interests focus on virology, ribosome structure/function relationships, and regulation of gene expression. Dinman has been awarded 14 patents, and authored over 100 articles and book chapters. He serves on the editorial board of the journals Nucleic Acids Research and Journal of Biological Chemistry, as editor-in-chief of the journal Virus Adaptation and Treatment, as chair of the biochemistry section for the National Siemens Competition, and as a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
Dinman, a Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) 2014-2015 CIC Academic Leadership Program Fellow and 2015 CIC Department Executive Officers Fellow, earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Oberlin College in 1980; and his Ph.D. in immunology and infectious diseases from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in 1988.
