College’s Alumni Network Announces 2019 Summer Undergraduate Award Winners
The awards will enable four students to study or conduct research in Scotland, at Columbia University and at the University of Maryland
The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) Alumni Network has announced its 2019 Undergraduate Summer Research, Travel and Educational Enrichment Award winners.
The four recipients will receive awards up to $2,000 to help defray costs related to conducting research or traveling to field courses, conferences or other summer activities that enhance or expand the student’s educational and professional development.
The 2019 award winners and their summer activities are:
Siddhartha Harmalkar, a triple major in computer science, physics and mathematics, will work with University of Maryland Physics Professor Paulo Bedaque. Harmalkar will help develop techniques to study the physical structure of subatomic particles at the quantum scale.
Claire Hinrichs, a physics and astronomy dual-degree student, will conduct physics research at Nevis Laboratories at Columbia University in New York City. Hinrichs will help investigate the properties of neutrinos—tiny subatomic particles that have almost no mass and rarely interact with other matter.
Cristy Ho, a geology major, will attend a geology field camp course hosted by the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Ho will learn geological mapping and other field techniques at a variety of locations throughout Scotland’s coastlines and mountains.
Leonard Liu, a biological sciences major, plans to conduct research in the laboratory of David Fushman, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UMD. Liu will investigate the physical structure of proteasomes, which are large protein complexes that are linked to many diseases including cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
