66 Professional-Track Faculty Members Promoted in UMD College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences
The University of Maryland College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) announced the promotions of 66 professional-track faculty members.
INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY
Those promoted to Principal Lecturer by the campus:

- Reid Compton, biology, joined CMNS in 1997. He has taught biological sciences courses including biology, genetics and mammalian histology. In addition, Compton is assistant chair and director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Biology and directs the College Park Scholars Life Sciences program.
- Michael Montague-Smith, chemistry and biochemistry, joined CMNS in 2004. In addition to teaching organic chemistry, Montague-Smith serves as the director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
- Justin Wyss-Gallifent, mathematics, joined CMNS in 1994. He has taught a wide variety of mathematics courses, most recently Calculus III, introduction to analysis, applications of linear algebra and introduction to MATLAB.

- Xiaolei Zou, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, joined CMNS in 2014. Zou researches satellite data assimilation for hurricane forecasting and climate change studies.
Those promoted to Research Scientist by the campus:

- Charon Birkett, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, joined CMNS in 2001. Birkett searches for new and improved applications of satellite remote sensing techniques, focusing on using radar and laser measurements to estimate surface water levels and area measurements.
- Christopher Kidd, Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, joined CMNS in 2011. Kidd uses remote sensing to study meteorology and climatology, with applications including local vegetation classification, elevation analysis and global precipitation studies.
