51 Professional-Track Faculty Members Promoted in UMD College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences

The University of Maryland’s College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) announced the promotions of 51 professional-track faculty members.

Instructional Faculty

Those promoted to Principal Lecturer by the campus:

  • Debra Franklin (M.A. ’81, secondary education), mathematics, joined CMNS in 1993. Franklin teaches and chairs several fundamental studies courses in mathematics, which she helped design and implement starting in 2001.
  • Karen McLaren (M.A. ’85, mathematics; Ph.D. ’05, curriculum and instruction education), mathematics, joined CMNS in 1994. In addition to teaching a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses, McLaren teaches mathematics education courses for education majors.
  • Patricia Shields, cell biology and molecular genetics, joined UMD in 2001. Shields teaches BSCI 348P: “General Biology Teaching Practicum,” which focuses on undergraduate science education, and BSCI 170: “Principles of Molecular and Cellular Biology.”
