51 Professional-Track Faculty Members Promoted in UMD College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences
The University of Maryland’s College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) announced the promotions of 51 professional-track faculty members.
Instructional Faculty
Those promoted to Principal Lecturer by the campus:
- Debra Franklin (M.A. ’81, secondary education), mathematics, joined CMNS in 1993. Franklin teaches and chairs several fundamental studies courses in mathematics, which she helped design and implement starting in 2001.
- Karen McLaren (M.A. ’85, mathematics; Ph.D. ’05, curriculum and instruction education), mathematics, joined CMNS in 1994. In addition to teaching a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses, McLaren teaches mathematics education courses for education majors.
- Patricia Shields, cell biology and molecular genetics, joined UMD in 2001. Shields teaches BSCI 348P: “General Biology Teaching Practicum,” which focuses on undergraduate science education, and BSCI 170: “Principles of Molecular and Cellular Biology.”
Those promoted to Senior Lecturer by the college:
- Hilary Bierman (B.S. ’01, psychology), biology
- Steven Chadwick, mathematics
- Michael Keller, cell biology and molecular genetics
- Natalia White (M.L.S. ’12, library and information services), chemistry and biochemistry
- Hadiya Woodham, biology
Research Faculty
Research Faculty Promotions
Those promoted to Research Professor by the campus:
- Gili Marbach-Ad, CMNS, joined UMD in 2004. Marbach-Ad directs the CMNS Teaching and Learning Center and studies higher education in the sciences.
- Juying Warner (Ph.D. ’97, meteorology), atmospheric and oceanic science, joined CMNS in 1990. Warner uses satellite remote sensing to study global air quality and climate change.
Those promoted to Research Scientist by the campus:
- Li-Jen Chen, astronomy, joined CMNS in 2014. Chen studies space plasma with a focus on how disturbances from the sun, such as solar wind and magnetic forces, impact Earth as it moves through space.
- Peter Teuben, astronomy, joined CMNS in 1989. Teuben develops software for simulating and studying galaxies and planetary systems. In addition, he studies galaxy dynamics with a focus on how stars and planets form out of gas. Teuben also develops techniques for more accurately deriving images from arrays of multiple radio telescopes, which he uses extensively in his work.
