FAQs - limited enrollment programs - internal and external transfer students

Which majors in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) are designated as Limited Enrollment Programs (LEPs)?

Effective Fall 2010, our majors in Biochemistry, the Biological Sciences (all Specialization Areas), Chemistry, and Environmental Science & Policy - Biodiversity & Conservation were designated as LEPs.  All other CMNS majors are open to all students without selective enrollment review.

How do I know when I am ready to apply for a LEP major in CMNS?

You only have one opportunity to apply to an LEP major in CMNS as a current University of Maryland student transferring internally from another UM major.  Do not apply until you have completed all gateway courses and have earned the GPA required for admission to the major. All of your academic records (AP scores and previous transcripts) must be applied to your student record by the application deadline. A final decision will be made based upon the records available at the time of your application. All college-level course work will be considered in the admissions decision, including courses taken at other institutions.

What are the internal transfer application deadlines for LEP admission?

For Internal Transfers (current UM students) - the CMNS LEP application is due by 4:00 p.m. on the 5th business day of the month as follows:
• Spring semester admission: January
• Fall semester admission: June

What are the requirements to for me to change my major (internal transfer) to an LEP major in CMNS?

The Limited Enrollment Program website provides general information about the LEP review process.  Specific gateway course requirements for the LEP majors in CMNS are also listed.

Are AP and IB credit accepted to fulfill LEP gateway requirements?

Yes.  The specific way in which AP/IB credit is handled depends upon the score and major. Please see the list of specific gateway course requirements for details.

Do all my course attempts count toward the gateway course review?

Yes.  Only one "gateway" course may be repeated to earn the required minimum grade; that course may only be repeated once.  Withdrawing from a course with a "W" and repeating it in a subsequent semester counts as a repeat for gateway review purposes.

How will I be notified if I am accepted into the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences?

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will contact you by mail for external transfers and by email for internal transfers. The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences does not have information on applicants' admission status. Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions if you have questions about your status.

If I am approved to change my major to a CMNS LEP program, are their other important requirements to remain in my major?

Students enrolled in a CMNS LEP major must continue to make Satisfactory Academic Progress by meeting the benchmarks of their major.  They must also maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the major. Any student denied admission or dismissed from the major may appeal in writing directly to the Assistant Dean for Student Services of CMNS.

How are external transfer applicants reviewed for LEP admission?

Students enrolled at other universities who wish to transfer to the University of Maryland (external transfer students) should review the University's Transfer Admissions Requirements and must apply online using the Transfer Admission Application.  External transfer students who have completed the LEP major gateway course requirements at their previous institution will be directly admitted to their LEP major of choice.  External transfer students who do not meet the gateway admission requirements for the CMNS LEP majors, but who are admissible to the University of Maryland will be admitted to Letters & Sciences, where they may work to fulfill the remaining gateway requirements for LEP admission. Once they meet these requirements, they must then apply for LEP admission as internal transfer student (please see above question).

External transfer students can contact the Pre-Transfer Advising office for additional information about transferring to the University of Maryland.

Where should my transcripts from other colleges, AP or IB score reports be sent University of Maryland?

You must have official transcripts from all previous institutions sent to: University of Maryland, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, College Park, MD 20742-5235. Please contact your school's Registration or Registrar's Office to request official transcripts. Official AP and IB score reports should be sent eletronically to the University of Maryland when making a request for score reporting from the College Board or International Baccalaureate Organization.

Will all the credits I have completed transfer to UM?

The UM Transfer Credit Center oversees the review and evaluation of transfer credit.  You can also read more general policies governing the transferability of credits.  Once students are admitted, they can obtain a preliminary evaluation of transfer credit online.

What should I do if my credits don't transfer as I think they should?

If you have reviewed your preliminary evaluation of transfer credit and still have questions, you should discuss them with your advisor during orientation.  Often, if a course has never been transferred before, there is no information about the course in our transfer credit database.  Please be prepared to provide a course syllabus, description or other supporting course material to submit for evaluation.
